Color blindness in kids
No matter if you are talking about kids or adults, color deficiency or color blindness can affect the way people see their lives. Some people do not believe that color blindness is an actual thing. Now, by color blindness, we do not necessarily mean that the person who has it won't see any colors at all. Color blindness could also refer to some colors; for instance, there could be a chance that the particular person faces a hard time identifying vivid colors, or subtle colors, for that matter.
However, the condition might differ; some people might face a situation where they can also see the world in 'Black and White' color. However, this is rare.
Color deficiency in children might occur due to the genetic defect that happens due to the loss of retinal pigment in the 'Cone' cells. And as color blindness is directly related to the genetic makeup of retinal cells, a child can't grow this issue as they age.
This color blindness test created by colorblindtest.us allows you to check deficiency. We have created this specialized test by collecting information from clinical experts and bringing it online. If you think your child has the name, with this color blind test, you can quickly determine if the color deficiency doubts related to your kid are valid.
Before taking test
The test helps people to understand whether or not their child has color blindness. However, before your child takes a color blindness test, keep in mind the following points:
Select the best mode for the child
To begin with, you first need to see in which mode your kid fits and make choices according to that. For children aged +10, there is a Numbers Mode for them. And for the kids aged 5-10, there is a Shape Mode for them. Ensure that the color blind test they are about to take will not be too difficult, so there is no reason for them to get overwhelmed.
So, see which criteria your kid fits and make choices according to that.
Let your kid sit comfortably and prepared
The next thing is that your kid must have a comfortable seat. Make them seated for at least 5 Minutes for the test. Also, make sure that they have a direct view of the computer screen (or any other device you are using for the color blind test.) Your kid should look directly at the screen and not from an off-axis, as that could affect the test results.
You can tell your kids that they are playing a fun game so that they should not feel any different while taking this strange test. Remember not to force your child to take the color blind test as it may affect their mental peace.
Remove eyewear a kid is wearing
Remove any colored and non-colored eyewear your kid is wearing. If you have numbered glasses, then you might want to keep them aside. Any eye accessory could make your child see different colors, altering the accuracy of the results.
Turn off the Blue light filter
It is a must-follow process while taking a color blind test on electronic devices. If the device you are using has the blue light filter on, then turn it off. If your computer screen has any color filters on, this may change the appearance of the actual color. Another thing you have to make sure that the brightness level of your chosen device is set to high.
Help your child
You must help your child to get ready for the test. If your kid does not know how to handle a mouse or any other settings, then you will have to do that part for them. For instance, scrolling through questions and making selections could be made with your support.
However, by helping them, we do mean here that you must also help your kids answer the questions, as this will have a direct effect on the test colors. Handle the mouse, but let your kid make the final decision. Also, try to be silent when the test is going on so that your kid gets the time to think and make the right decision. Also, before moving further, ask your kid to confirm their answer, so you do not get stuck with the wrong choice.
How Color blind test for kids work
There are 2 Modes
In total, there are 2 modes to choose from. Firstly, there is a Shape mode for kids between 5-10, and secondly, there is a Number Mode for kids above 10. These 2 Different modes make it easy for kids to solve the quiz.
Test format
The test contains a series of images composed of dots of different sizes and lightness. We gathered these images from eye doctors. Identifying the correct symbol or numbers embedded within the dot pattern will decide the results.
Skip the answer if your kid is unsure
You can skip the answer if you see that your kid is doubtful about it. It will not affect the result whereas guessing the wrong answer can result in inaccuracy. Therefore, if you witness a question where your kid is adamant, just let that question be and jump to another question.
Works with Clinical Method
This test follows the color plate test clinical method used to determine color blindness deficiency in kids. Several eye care specialists have reviewed the results of this test and their suggestions help us to improve.
This one is the most common test that doctors use for color blindness. When your kid takes this color blind test, the eye doctor will ask them to look at an image made up of colored dots that comprises a different colored shape in the middle.
If the middle shape blends or gets blurred in the background, and your kid faces a hard time identifying the number, your kid may have a color blindness type. The doctors may choose different color plates to check the kind of color blindness.
In our test, we have implemented the same method to detect color deficiency in your kids. However, this is an online color blind test that you can take from home. Therefore, without going to the doctor, you can let your kid take the color blindness test from the comfort of your home.
Is the Color blindness Age factor?
Some other factors might be the reason behind color blindness, and the most common of all is aging. Vision loss or color deficiency can occur with age. In addition to that, toxic chemicals such as styrene (that are usually present in plastics) may also be the reason behind color blindness in some cases.
Signs that show your child is color blind
When is the right time for your kid to take a color blindness test? When you start seeing signs in them. Following are some signs which may indicate that your kid is color blind:
You Child is using the wrong colors
If your child gets stuck with the wrong color every time they are coloring in their book, it is a sign that they may be facing color blindness. Spotting this issue early in your kid will spare them the embarrassment they could face in school when other kids start picking on them. Also, when you ask your kid to tell which color it is by pointing at a color, and they face a hard time answering that, it is your cue.
Can't tell the difference between red and green color
The most common symptom of color blindness is when your kid cannot tell the difference between red and green color. If they are referring to red as green or brown and vice-versa, then there is something wrong with their vision.
Or, when your kid starts mixing colors alongside brown or green, then this could be the early sign that your kid might have a color deficiency.
Sensitivity to bright lights
Every eye consists of special nerve cells that start reacting to light, including cones and rods. These cones help control our color vision. The cone has color pigments that respond to short, medium, and high wavelengths. These pigments are responsible for every color we see. And even though the rods only have one kind of pigment, they perform the same way. They do not have anything to do with the colors we see, but they are sensitive to bright lights, which allows us to see even in darkness.
So, if your child is color blind, they will be more sensitive to bright lights. So, if your child is sensitive to light and faces a hard time identifying different colors simultaneously, then this may be the sign they are color blind.
Complaining about eye
If you find your child complaining about their eye the entire time, then there is a probability that your child is color blind. These issues may include a difficult time identifying colors and how they see a different color when other kids say otherwise.
Also, easter egg hunts can be pretty challenging for color blinded kids, as they might get picked by other kids when they fail to find an easter egg of a particular color.
There could be a chance that your kid is using their other sensors to identify things. For instance, a colorblind kid might touch their food before eating it or smell things before conveying them.
If your child is using their other senses to identify things or food, then there is a possibility they might be compensating for the lack of colors they see. Another thing about children with color deficiency is that they try to settle in and do not want to be focused as someone different. Therefore, they do their best not to let others find out about their issue. Now, the reasons for this might be many.
For instance, they might not want the kids at their time to laugh at them, or the teachers treat them differently. So, focusing on these minor details is something you should pay attention to.
Your family is color blind
As we already mentioned, color blindness is an inherited condition that is usually passed through ancestors. So, if your whole family is color blind, including your parents, grandparents, and uncle/aunts, the chances of your child being the same get multiplied.
Kids usually start learning and identifying colors at 18 months, so after this age, if your kid starts showing signs that may include the above symptoms, there is a chance that they could be color blinded. By the age a kid turns, they can tell the difference between the colors they see. And only the paternal side of the family doesn't need to be responsible for color blindness as the maternal side could also be responsible for the same.
If you notice any of the above signs in your kid, you can take this easy color blind test to diagnose an issue.
Parental Advice
Many symptoms suggest that your kid could be color blinded. Even though there are many clinical treatments available on the market that can help detect the issue in your kid, this color blindness test is way cheaper and gives instant results.
As parents, it is your responsibility always to keep an eye on your child's behavior. And if your kid is going through a hard time, then it should be you who must identify the issue first, not their class teacher who informs you about the same in a parent-teacher meeting.
What is the point of going for the expensive treatments when you can do the same in 2 minutes in the comfort of your own home? We highly recommend going with this color blind test for kids to rule out such issues in your child. However, we recommend you to consult a doctor even if test results show your child is color blinded. It will get you clear your doubts and special treatment.
